Of course we have the obvious- meals for the postpartum mom are heaven. HEAVEN. And so are bags stuffed with groceries. Once a good friend came by after I had Clementine and dropped three grocery bags filled with easy, self-serve stuff for the kids- yogurt packs, string cheese, lunch meat, fruit (and beer and wine yaaaasss). I don't think it gets much better than that. But the reason why we love it is because it's taking care of them (husband, kids, etc)- which, in turn, takes a load off of us. Food will forever and ever win the postpartum gift competition, so let's just crown it and put it to the side.
But there is something especially tear-inducing, touching, wonderful, etc. when a package shows up at your doorstep just for you. And often times we just don't live close enough to the new mom to make her food or drop off groceries. Or maybe we do live close but are swimming in our own pile of children (insecurely raises hand). The new, fresh days of mommying are usually filled to the brim with milk stains and diapers and sleep and not sleep and never-ending top knots. There is something about spoiling a new mom juuuuusst a little bit that snaps her back into the realization that she is still there, down underneath all the postpartum jiggle and the hormonal sweat baths. And we should give her that, huh?
So, if you have a new mama in your world and you are wanting to get her a little something, here are some of my fav's (to give and receive, thank you v. much)
1. A care package full of new toiletries
Wow. Can there be an even lamer title for that? Anyone? Anyone?
NE WAY how hard is it to shower or bath or pamper right after you've had a baby? It's hard! But nothing motivates me like new stuff that smells good. My favorite's right now are this lavender and aloe lotion, Alba's Un-Petroleum Jelly, and this witch hazel (with rose petal and aloe). Maybe a package of these babies for the weeks to come? Maybe some new nail polish to lighten up the fact that you just sent your girlfriend pads and witch hazel?
2. A robe
Mrs P got me a robe right before Joe was born and I can't tell you how much better it made me feel about schelpping around in pajams. It made me so happy I even cried. Soooo, choices!
-I adore this one in the ivory print.
-This is so, so cute and simple. Kinda the perfect robe!
-But these sleeves!!
-And this is just so classy and chic. I love it in Dusty Mauve. Maybe a good choice for a group gift?
-Perfect, affordable choice + pockets (heart eyes 4 pockets)
I always find myself snooping on new jewelry after I have a baby and I KNOW it's because it's the sure fire way to spruce up my look without having to dive into a new outfit when my body is in such a wonky stage. A new piece of jewelry can totally overhaul an outfit that would otherwise be mreh. I think rings and earrings are the go-to when it comes to a postpartum gift. Rings are easy to slip on and off and won't be obnoxious during nursing like a necklace or a bracelet might. And earrings just stay in your ears, which could not be simpler.
For rings (and I love a good ring) I would happily accept this gold drusy cuteness, this super wide band, this gold circle ring, this criss-cross ring on SALE, this double bar ring, this letterpress ring (baby's initial!!), or this giant gorgeous thing on mega sale at anthro (how cute is the blue??).
And we all know nothing accents a messy topknot or ponytail like a good pair of gold hoops or these cute bar studs. Simple swag is EZ.
4. A bath
I know, I know you can't give her an actual bath- but set her up for one. This postpartum soak, a cute candle (or a cute on-sale candle), a new scrubby, a face mask, a list of your fav Netflix shows (Gran Hotel, Gran Hotel, Gran Hotel). Drop the hints! She will get it.
5. JUST TRUST ME
A friend gave these to me a few weeks ago and she wins forever. Just... trust me. (keywords: crotch snaps, magic)
6. A little something for the bb...
Because every mom likes something sweet for her little one, no matter how many she's had. My favorite little something's simple to give (and get) are this teensy little teething bracelet, the cutest baby cap known to man, or this Milkbarn swaddle which is kinda one of those things you know she'd probably never splurge on but you could and she'd love it.
(*all up in my new robe*)
What are some of your fav gifts for new a mama?? I want to know!
