That scary thing I did

So, do you remember when I said I filmed that YouTube video on Catholicism? Here it is! Overall, I think it turned out really well and I feel accurately represented (thanks, Soul Pancake). Oh and I KNOW I said "we have been A catholic for eight years" I know, I KNOW. I'll be face-palming about it forever. The YouTube comments section is rife with questions and misconceptions. I think I'll do a follow up post here trying to answer some of those. If you have a question or something you would like to know more about, leave it here in the comments. If you don't, I'll assume you agree fully with everything I said. (Just kidding). If there are a fair amount of questions I might even do a little crappy vlog post so you don't have to real a novel and maybe (if you're lucky) I will drag Kirby into the fray. Anyway, click on (yikes!).

  1. Blythe- found your blog through this video. It must be somewhat nerve wrecking and vulnerable to put yourself out there like this. You are so brave! The video is awesome and informative, and I love how you are willing to answer the tough questions, albeit effortlessly and graciously!

  3. I love that you and your friends are breathing life (in more ways than one!) into the Catholic Church. It is refreshing to see you living it out and displaying to the world the beauty that is there. Your children are blessed to have you nurturing them in the fullness and stability that the Catholic Church offers.

  7. I really enjoyed seeing this as well as reading your blog! My husband and I converted to Catholicism 10 years ago and the main driving force for us was the issue of Christians being one, you put that so beautifully! We also have 5 very young kids so it's fun finding someone I have so much in common with...too bad I'm in TX! Your joy and light in this video is sure to attract people to the Church! God bless you and your sweet family!

  10. So... how to say this without completely freaking you out...

Can I be your best friend?
    A little strong? Fair enough.

But seriously, putting yourself out there in such a beautiful, honest way was so encouraging. It affirms what I already know to be true, that there are fun, hip, holy Catholics out there and maybe we're not so rare.

I've been praying for a real-life community like yours to exist when we move this summer (wishing it was Fillmore, now) to Denton, Texas. Any chance you know of someone exactly like you that I can go live next door to? (But don't tell them you sent me, I wouldn't want to come off creepy...)

Now, if you need to delete this and then block me, I understand...

  13. Hi Blythe, I am actually protestant (Presbyterian),but wanted to tell you that you spoke with such grace about your faith.
One thing I'd love for you to expand more on is the Hail Mary prayer. Is is a prayer of confession or is a prayer to Mary? Just curious!
    Love your blog!

  15. Ahhh I finally finished watching the vid! I loved it, and goodness, how well spoken and how beautifully you represent Catholicism in such concise answers. My favorite part is where you say because you don't like the disunity you ARE Catholic. Love it!

  16. I saw it on my FB page-- I loved the video. I love seeing big Catholic families as....normal. And, Zack was HYSTERICAL! :)

  18. I loved this video! My husband and I converted to Eastern Orthodoxy a couple of years ago from a very evangelical background such as yourself. While there are differences in the two religions obviously, there are a lot of similarities too..more so than with any Protestant religion. Its been hard for me to find people to relate to, so thanks for this video and blog too;)

  19. Blythe, you were so well-spoken and humble and welcoming. I'm proud and thankful to have you represent our Faith!

  20. Oh neat. New Catholic reader here (from Camp Patton). I'm excited to find another Catholic mom blog. (I'm sure there are a lot of them out there) but I'm excited to fill my blogroll with others religiously like-minded. Thank you for sharing in this video, I bet it was terrifying, but you make it look so easy. :) What an adorable family you have.

  21. Well, doesn't the Lord work in very mysterious ways. I just watched this video this morning, Misty from Misty's Mornings linked to it on Google+. The I finally catch my breath during rest and quiet and start reading through Camp Patton and she link to her new favorite blog and here you are again!

As I was watching your lovely video this morning, my husband wandered in the office and a couple of kids and we were enamored by your gracious smile as you spoke about Holy Mother Church.

  30. What a great video! Thank you so much for representing our faith and the vocation of marriage so well. 31. I just watched this video and want to say THANK YOU so much! I'm actually on a journey right now of trying to figure out where I fit with Christianity, and I'm so interested in Catholicism. I'd love to hear more about your conversion. It seems really scary for me to go to a Catholic church for the first time, but I'm feeling drawn to do that. Any pointers for someone who isn't Catholic learning more about what it means to be Catholic? Also, it sounds like your husband converted, too, but I'm in a position where my husband is not really religious at all. He is willing to go to church with me, but for me not for his beliefs. If you have any advice or know anyone in this position I'd love to hear how they manage that. It's not a huge problem right now, but it could be one in the future.

  35. When I saw that SoulPancake was doing a video on Catholicism I was skeptical. So skeptical in fact that I avoided the video for a few days, convinced it would only make me mad.

But then on Easter Sunday I watched it... and I was in absolute awe of how wonderful it was! You are an incredible witness of the joy of our Catholic faith, and the entire video I just sat there saying "YES! EXACTLY! AMEN!" :) And just when I thought it couldn't get better, you mentioned NFP!

My husband and I are so grateful for your brave witness, and we are inspired by your family. Thank you for stepping out and allowing Christ to witness the beauty of His Bride, the Church, through you are your family.

    God bless you always!!

  36. So great!!! I loved that they ended with the shot of the kids :). I feel like they totally "got it." The joy, the hope, the love, the fruitfulness. God bless your courageous self for being open to the vulnerability of putting yourself out there and on camera!

  37. Wow! I am catholic and really love and appreciate what you said in this video. So often people think of the Catholic faith as somber and negative (at least in my experience) but you so beautifully showed the joy and grace of our faith. My husband is Baptist and we often discuss the differences in our faith...I can't wait to share this with him! I sometimes have a hard time articulating what I love about being Catholic and the beauty of confessing your sins. I really look forward to a video on the Hail Mary and what Mary means to us Catholics. You very honestly have helped to restore my faith and remind me of the things that I so love about being Catholic. Thank you for your vulnerability and willingness to share a piece of your family's story. I look forward to hearing/reading more!
    So much love,

  38. Hi I loved this im a catholic in Australia with four young children the way you explained why and how you are open to life in your marriage was great. I have been thinking that when people ask about the size of our family and our plans for more kids in the future it is a perfect chance to witness to gods love and generosity. But I find it really hard to find the right words. Thanks that really helped xo
